Optical Separation of open contours: New If you select a vector drawing in the Glyph window or on the Sketchboard, and perform Element > Optically Separate, FontLab splits the non-overlapping parts of the vector drawing into separate elements. You can control how this works in Preferences > Operations > Optical separation. New Now, optical separation correctly splits centerline vector images (open contours). Importing Metrics: New You can now correctly import metrics data from JSON files, you can now import metrics for multiple masters simultaneously, and you can import metrics expressions from JSON files. Copying Metrics between masters: New You can now copy the numeric value of a glyph metric (the advance width, the left sidebearing or the right sidebearing) of the current glyph from the current master to all other masters. To do that: In the Widget field for the glyph metric, choose ⋮ > Copy to Masters Or in the Glyph panel, click the Copy … to masters button next to the glyph metric field Previously, these operations only copied the metric if it was an expression. Kerning matching and interpolation: New If a master is an intermediate master on one axis but an edge master on another axis, FontLab now correctly interpolates values for kerning pairs that are not defined in the master. This works with Match Kerning and during export. Previously, undefined kerning pairs were assumed to be 0 in this case. New Match Kerning now prioritizes kerning classes from the default master. If no kerning classes are found in the default master, it will use kerning classes from one of the corner masters. This addresses situations where kerning data is defined in the corners of the design space and needs to be interpolated for the default master. Font Info overview: New In the Font Info dialog, the Overview page now lets you easily see entries that differ across masters. Edit & refine: Power Nudge and Genius nodes: Power Nudge helps you make larger adjustments to your contours quickly with the Contour tool. Click the Power Nudge toggle in the Contour toolbox or tap ShiftC, select some nodes, drag them, and FontLab magically figures out which other nodes should follow the change proportionally (they become “auto-servant” nodes during the operation). Or hold C to activate Power Nudge temporarily. Power Nudge is a great helper if you’re condensing a glyph or changing its overall proportions — but it never played well with Genius nodes. If a smooth node is Genius, it automatically finds its position between its two handles to remain G2-smooth. If a Genius node is not selected, it has been trying to move one way, but Power Nudge has been trying to pull it another way. The dissonance could escalate quickly, and could lead to unpredictable changes to your contour. New In FontLab 8.4.1, non-selected Genius nodes behave more gently if Power Nudge is turned on. They only follow the change if their handles are horizontal or vertical, otherwise they stay in place. Build & assemble: Inheriting anchors: If a glyph has mark anchors (in which the name is prefixed with _), and you use that glyph as a component source in a composite glyph (including auto layers), the composite glyph: New will not inherit that anchor if its OT Definition in the Glyph panel is set to Simple or Ligature, or if the auto layer recipe ends with #? noanchors. will otherwise inherit the anchor. It no longer mismatches layers if you export a color font into the OpenType COLR format and the export profile has the setting Add required glyphs turned on. Also, when converting imported SVG images into editable elements, FontLab now correctly interprets the “arc” operator. |
